New Zealand Student Visa: Increased Work Hours & Key Changes

We have great news for anyone with a New Zealand student visa! Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced their International Education Going for Growth plan. These changes make New Zealand even more welcoming and supportive for international students. You can now enjoy more work opportunities, better study options, and clear pathways for your future.

Increased Work Rights: More Hours for Students

From November 3, 2025, students with a New Zealand student visa can work up to 25 hours per week while studying. This is an increase from the previous limit of 20 hours. The change applies to tertiary students, including undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as secondary school students in years 12 and 13.

If your student visa is issued after November 3, 2025, this change applies to you automatically. If you already hold a visa, you can still benefit by applying for a variation of conditions or a new visa.

New Rule for Changing Courses or Schools

If you want to change your education provider or switch to a lower-level course, you must now apply for a new student visa. This rule helps keep the education system fair and transparent. It also ensures that students stay on the right path toward their goals.

Work Rights for Exchange and Study Abroad Students

There’s good news for exchange and Study Abroad students too. All tertiary students on approved exchange programs, even those in a one-semester course, can now work while studying. This helps you gain real-world experience even if your program is short.

A New Short-Term Work Visa on the Horizon

INZ is exploring a short-term work visa of up to six months. This will help some vocational graduates who don’t qualify for a post-study work visa. It’s a great way to gain skilled work experience after graduation.
